The aim of the project is to build capacities and connections with markets to produce, store properly and disseminate seeds of key cover/relay crops and underutilized species. The action will bring together Laotian (DALaM and EFICAS project) and Cambodian (DALRM/CASC) partners involved in the field of agro-ecology and Conservation Agriculture (CA) since several decades, ECHO Asia a key player in seed sources for hard-to-find and underutilized species in South-East Asia, higher education programs with national universities (RUA and UBB), US universities (Pennsylvania State and Kansas State University) involved in the Feed the Future Initiative, and development workers (ALISEA members and others NGO).
Five main activities will be implemented from January 2017 to December 2018 through direct funding from CANSEA/ACTAE and co-funding with: (1) strengthening two existing platforms in Laos and Cambodia to produce, store seeds and help with seed supply, (2) building the capacities of partners, (3) participating to a regional conference to disseminate the knowledge and know-how on the use of the underutilized species and cover/relay crops, (4) updating a technical booklet for the hard-to-find species and main cover and secondary crops, and (5) identify potential opportunities within cover/relay crops value chains. A total budget of $83,100 is requested with a contribution of $30,000 from CANSEA/ACTAE.
